Estepona is bringing the chessboards back out onto the streets this summer. On Thursday, 13 August 2026, the seafront promenade will host the 40th “Ciudad de Estepona” Night Chess Tournament, an event that celebrates its 40th edition this year and has become one of the city’s most distinctive summer sporting events.

A different kind of evening by the sea, where strategy, concentration and a summer atmosphere come together in a competition open to chess enthusiasts.

40 years of chess by the sea

The tournament will begin at 8:00 p.m. on Estepona’s seafront promenade, turning the area into a major meeting point for players and chess fans for a few hours.

Chess will continue to have a strong presence on the seafront throughout the summer. Until 23 August, the free “Chess for Everyone” initiative invites residents and visitors to take part in quick games and enjoy the giant chessboards set up by the sea, every evening from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

When and where will it take place?

Date: Thursday, 13 August 2026

Time: 8:00 p.m.

Location: Estepona Seafront Promenade

Whether you are taking part or simply want to come along and enjoy the atmosphere and watch the games, it can be a different kind of plan for an August evening in Estepona.

Did you know…? Chess has a history spanning more than 1,500 years. Its origins are generally traced back to India, where a game known as chaturanga was played around the 6th century and is considered one of the main predecessors of modern chess. Since then, its rules have gradually evolved, turning it into one of the best-known and most widely played strategy games in the world.

Complete your plan before the tournament at Estepona Park

If you’re heading to the seafront promenade to enjoy the tournament, you can make the most of the afternoon with another plan before the games begin.

A stop at Estepona Park can be a great option to browse its shops, do a little shopping or pick up that last thing you need before continuing with your day. Afterwards, all that’s left is to head to the seafront promenade and enjoy one of Estepona’s most traditional summer sporting evenings.

Because a great plan can start with some shopping and end among kings, queens, knights and checkmates by the Mediterranean.
